There are many Linux distributions that can be found in the internet for free. I have installed a few like Fedora, openSuse, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Sabayon, Linux Mint, CentOS and Slackware.

I have given a brief introduction for some of these distributions in my webpage titled 'Linux Distributions'. Here, I would like to give you a little of my opinion of Sabayon.

I have used a few 'flavours' of linux operating systems. I am using mostly Mandriva and Fedora. With those two distributions, the file systems seemed to get errors and corrupted very easily especially so when I enter the internet. Also my hard disk has some peoblems. It seems that these two systems checked one system error / problems many times before moving to another sector but Sabayon check less times.

Then the system will go to shell for maintenance. As I am only a user, I do not know how to recover the corrupted file system. Many times after correcting the files and systems, it still cannot work normally. I have to reinstall them.

Sabayon, on the other hand, treats this problem differently. The error in the filesystem will be left uncorrected for small problems. The system will continue to mount instead of falling into a shell for repair immediately. Only big problems will fall into shell. I like Sabayon for this features.

Therefore, for a homeuser like me, I need not have to reinstall the software. This makes it a better operating software but it is important to backup your work everytime after working on it.

For those who like games, Sabayon has many games in its Sabayon 5.4 Xmas Game Edition. One game that I like most is Battle for Wesnoth. It has other battles games such as 0 A.D. and Warzone 2100 where you can play single player.

The advantages and disadvntages of Sabayon Linux distribution.

One advantage is that like other free and open source software, it is available for free, downloadable from the internet.

Secondly, the users have free support everyday from the internet and not from a particular company which may close on certain days. People from all over the world can help the users anytime, anywhere.

Thirdly, it has a good games edition, Sabayon 5.4 Xmas Game Edition which home-user can concentrate mainly for games.

Fourthly, as I have mentioned earlier, only big problems will fall into shell. So, reinstallation is required less but users must backup their data more often or everytime after making changes.

As for the disadvantage, I would say that Sabayon is not a popular office distribution. In Malaysia where there are very few companies doing free and open source software, Sabayon is like cannot be found in Malaysia. Software support for this distribution is like none in Malaysia.

Second disadvantage is Sabayon games edition does not have a simple editor like gedit nor an office suite for users to jot down notes. So, you should know how difficult it is for me to write 'Battle for Wesnoth' game notes.

The third disadvantage is it is very much like Ubuntu in its selection for booting menu. Sabayon 5.4 game edition which I have does not let you choose or edit the contents for operating system selection menu when doing installation. The selection for booting menu gets messy with all the wrong operating system names.
