There are many Linux distributions that can be found in the internet for free. I have installed a few like Fedora, openSuse, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Sabayon, Linux Mint, CentOS and Slackware.

I have given a brief introduction for some of these distributions in my webpage titled 'Linux Distributions'. Here, I would like to give you a little of my opinion of Linux Mint.

Linux Mint was derive from Ubuntu. Linux Mint is home-user friendly to me. Office packages are included in the distribution too. Because LinuxMint is derived from Ubuntu, it has many games options which can be downloaded from Ubuntu. This makes it gamer friendly too.

Some of the games that I like area battle games such as glest. I guess you can find many gaming friends from Linux Mint user sites.

However, I do not know how well hardwares for games such as joystick are supported by this distribution because my hardwares for games are mainly the keyboard and mouse.

The advantages and disadvntages of Linux Mint Linux distribution.

One advantage is that like other free and open source software, it is available for free, downloadable from the internet.

Secondly, the users have free support everyday from the internet and not from a particular company which may close on certain days. People from all over the world can help the users anytime, anywhere.

Thirdly, it supports a wide variety of games and therefore good for gamers. I do not know about the support for hardware by this system.

As for the disadvantage, I would say that there are very few companies doing free and open source software especially in Malaysia. It is very difficult to find companies selling and supporting better known linux distribution like Redhat and openSuse. Linux is more of a DIY kind of software.

The second disadvantage of LinuxMint 10 distribution which I have is it does not let you choose or edit the contents for operating system selection menu. The grub menu get messy with all the wrong operating system. I guess installations from Live distributions are not that good.
