There are many Linux distributions that can be found in the internet for free. I have installed a few like Fedora, openSuse, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Sabayon, Linux Mint, CentOS and Slackware.

I have given a brief introduction for some of these distributions in my webpage titled 'Linux Distributions'. Here, I would like to give you a little of my opinion of Ubuntu.
Gnome classic on Ubuntu 11.04

Ubuntu is said to be one of the most widely used Linux distribution. It is one of Redhat / Fedora's main competitor. Ubuntu to me, is just ok because I do not find anything outstanding in Ubuntu's distribution.

Ubuntu has almost everything that I can think of which a normal user may want. Even gamers would like this software because it bundles some games and has links to game sites. Maybe this is one reason why it is a major Linux distribution software now.

As I seldom use Ubuntu, I have nothing much to comment. Maybe I would say that the window desktop which users see plays an important part for users in all Linux distributions. So, watch out for Linux Desktops.

Unity on Ubuntu 11.04
The latest Ubuntu came with its new desktop environment called Unity. Unity is more like Gnome 3 with a panel on top and some icons of mostly used programs on the left. These two can be said as totally different from the classic desktop environment.

The advantages and disadvntages of Ubuntu Linux distribution.

One advantage is that like other free and open source software, it is available for free, downloadable from the internet.

Secondly, the users have free support everyday from the internet and not from a particular company which may close on certain days. People from all over the world can help the users anytime, anywhere.

Thirdly, as one of the biggest Linux distribution in the world, it has many people and users who can help you if you needed help.

As for the disadvantage, I would say that there are very few companies doing free and open source software especially in Malaysia. It is very difficult to find companies selling and supporting better known linux distribution like Redhat and openSuse. Linux is more of a DIY kind of software.

Another disadvantage is its selection for booting menu. I do not like it as it is stupid in naming the systems available. Also the codes are more complicated in the front-end unlike openSuse, Fedora and Madriva.
