Malaysia's National Day is its (Malaya) independence day which was on the 31-Aug-1957. This is also called Merdeka Day or Independence Day. Tanah Melayu or Malaya was declared independant by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman on this date at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.
Before that date, the Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak was under British rule. The Malays were unhappy with the British. Some fought with them and some decided to fight for independence. So a few people of different races from different political groups decided to join together to fight for independence. This is why Malaysia is a multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-religion and multi-cultural country. During that time, 'Malaysia' was only the Peninsula Malaysia called 'Tanah Melayu' and did not include Sarawak and Sabah. Though Malaysia was not formed on 31-Aug-1957, that was the first step to the formation of Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaysia in 16-Sep-1963 together with Singapore. However Singapore left Malaysia in 1965. 31-Aug is one of the most important public holiday in Malaysia. Every year on this date, Malaysia will have march-pass at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur in the morning. On the eve of the day or at 12 midnight on 31-Aug, there will be fireworks display. The top row photos and left second row photo show some presentation on the eve of Merdeka Day. The right second row photo shows Mr Lim Guan Eng, Penang's new Chief Minister from the new state Government called Pakatan Rakyat, giving a speech. The left third row photo shows a firework, a must in almost all celebrations. the right third row photo shows a dance performed by people dressed in many different ethnic / race costumes, The rest were some teams which took part in the march pass, the last being from the army with their face painted. Good but looked rather scary and with big rifles somemore. |
