Sultan Abdul Samad Building is the main building located in Merdeka / Independence Square. Behind it is the Klang River, after the confluence of Gombak and Klang River. The foundation was officiated on the
06-Oct-1894 by Governor of Straits Settlement, Sir Charles Mitchell. It was completed in 1897 and was used as government offices. This building is 122m long.
The lower ground was designed by
A.C.Norman and the upper floor was designed by Mr Bidwell. It has a Moorish architecture and classical Renaissance structure. Its clock tower is
43m high and has an Arabesque style. It has two circular stair towers. Each of these 2 towers has a dome made from copper which was a gift from Australia. Originally, the dome was made using copper sheets covering wooden frame and painted black. Most of the stairs in this building is circular. Sultan Abdul Samad Building has 3.5m wide verandah and tiled roof. It was built using 4 million red bricks with stone dressing.
It has been used by many departments. The ground floor has been used by many government departments such as district office and Mines Department. The upper floor was offices and rooms of officials. However, it is now vacant and going to be used by Ministry of Information, Communication, Culture and Arts.
