Bujang Valley or Lembah Bujang in Malay Language is an archaeological site in Kedah south of Jerai Mountain. There are about 80 archaeological sites where the rulers left their historical trace. Some popular areas are around the Merbok River, Muda River Valley and a few district around the area. The first few of these sites were found by James Low, a British Resident around 1840s.
Bujang Valley was an important trading place between east and west especially, India, China and Arab in the 2nd to 14th century. The rulers were very much influenced by the Indian religion and culture. Therefore, many artifact especially religion related carvings were pictures of Buddhas and some Indian / Hindu Gods. There are many candis or temples where the statue of the gods were placed. One popular candi site is the Pengkalan Bujang Site which was found by Quaritch Wales in 1936. The temple was excavated from the original place in Kampung Pengkalan Bujang around 1976 and was rebuilt in this archaeological site. Many artifacts such as stone carvings of their god, beads, crystal, coins and teracotta oil lamps. The Bujang Valley archaeological site has a museum, a few candis (about four when I was there) and a way up to Jerai Mountain as shown in left forth row photo. Other candis or temples in this site are Candi Bukit Batu Pahat shown in right forth row photo, Candi Bendang Dalam and Candi Pendiat. There was a small area selling CDs related to Malaysia at the entrance inside the museum. The museum displayed many model of some candis and the artifacts found in the areas around those temples when they were excavated. The entrance fee into the museum and around the area is free. There is also a free parking carpark. Lastly, kindly help keep Bujang Valley clean by throwing rubbish into trashbin. |
