Penang George Town's Mosques |
Back |
This page is on some mosque in George Town especially Kapitan Keling Mosque, the oldest mosque in Penang. Actually this mosque was built or founded in the late 18th century. The mosque was samll and could not accommodate the growing followers. Therefore, in 1801, this bigger one was built and named after the indian muslim merchant headman named Caudeer Mohudeen also known as Kapitan Kling.
The original land area was about 18 acres when Kapitan Kling applied for the land grant. Now, the land area for mosque is about 8 acres. Actually the building that you see now is a new / rebuilt building that was built in 1916.
The top left photo shows part of the building of Kapitan Keling Mosque from main entrance along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (or Lebuh Pitt as known in the oldern days). The top right photo shows a stone which shows a brief history of the mosque. The left second row photo shows a row (block) of room where some tuition classes (stated near the door showing for which standard) are held for muslim children, I guess. The right second row photo shows the tower of the mosque taken from inside the mosque.
Then, there is another mosque in Acheh Street called the Masjid Melayu (Jamek) Lebuh Acheh. This mosque was founded by an Arab merchant prince from Aceh in 1808. I did not enter the mosque, so I did not get any photo of the building except the tower as seen in left third row photo.
The right third row photo shows another mosque located at Chulia Street called the Nagore Dargha Sheriff mosque. I guess this is built by indian muslim from its name.
