Ngemah Longhouse How to come
Lemanak River flows from deep inside the jungle, near the Malaysia-Indonesia border in Sri Aman Division, one of 11 administrative divisions in Sarawak. The transportation method to reached thise village is by taking a motorised longboat along Lemanak River from a small village Lubok Subong in Sri Aman. This longboat trip will take about 45 minutes. As far as I know, there is no other method.

The local people of Ngemah Longhouse are Iban. They are the main indigenous native people of Sarawak. In the olden days, Ibans were head-hunters and therefore mostly hunters. Now, in the morning, you can see them with baskets of fruits such as durians collected from the forest. Hill paddy fields can be seen too when on long-boat ride along Lemanak River.

The Iban has many customs which some may or may not be practices anymore now. For example headhunting. However, their way of welcoming people are still the same. They will offer tuak which is their traditional rice wine to guest.

Iban Ngemah Longhouse experience
The longhouse that I visited caters about 30 families. This group of Iban is offering home-stay packages to people. On my first night there, they slaughtered a chicken as an offering to the souls around their area. Then, they performed a few (three) native dances for us. The 3 dances looked almost the same and I think is the Ngajat dance, Iban's warrior dance. During this presentation, we were offered tuak too.

The next morning, one Iban man showed us their way of using blowpipe. I think the method of blowing blowpipe is the same but the blowpipe and the dart might be slightly different. Then we went for a nature walk somewhere upstream from this village. After coming out fromthe jungle, we had a barbeque lunch cooked using the traditional way.
Iban's Handicraft

Of course, what about sleep? Well, in the evening, most if not all this longhouse community will provide 1 or 2 mattresses and mosquito nets and set-up the sleeping area for tourists.

The plan of the house.

Travel Tips and How to get there?
1. From Kuching, and ask some tour agencies regarding homestay packages in Lemanak.
2. Torch light is a must because light will be out by midnight. Toilets are outside the longhouse.
