The Sucker Mouth Catfish or Plec is a herbivoruos fish. The scientific name is Animalia Chordata Actinopterygii Siluriformes Loricariidae Hypostomus sp. I will not put the species because this sucker mouth genus has many species for example plecostomus and punctatus are 2 common species. In fact I am not very sure whether the genus is correct or not. My sucker mouth is about 6 inches. I keep it in a plastic container because I feed it with herbivourous tablet and change the water everyday. Most of the time, twice a day. This fish has been with me for more than 2 years already.

Sucker Mouth Catfish is a herbivourous fish and live in fast flowing water in the wild. So, even though book and articles state they are hardy fishes, I say that the water chemistry must be neutral and 'fresh' like our clean drinking water. Though it is a herbivourous fish, it is also a detrivorous fish. Its mouth has teeth that can eat some variaty of food like invertebrates and detritus. Detritivores feed by consuming detritus or decomposing organic matter. So, they are important in water ecosystem and food chain, biogeochemical cycles.

Before I change the water in my Big Tank and Hospital Tank, I will put this sucker mouth catfish into the tank to 'clean' it first. This will provide it 'real' food (the algae in the tank) apart from its daily herbivourous tablets when they are in the small plastic container. It will die if you do not give food tablets to it. I had many which died after about 3 month before I started giving food tablets. Now, this sucker mouth catfish kas been ok for more than 2 years.
