Penang Roti Canai / Murtabak (Indian)
Roti Canai and the 'wrapper/skin' for Murtabak are made from wheat batter added with egg and indian ghee (if not mistaken), then kneaded and flipped into very thin round sheet. For roti canai, the sides of the round sheet is folded into a square shape and put onto a hot pan with fire below the pan for a short time and then serve with dal curry or chicken curry. One piece roti canai is normally RM0.80 to RM1.00 (year 2013 price) including the curry and some slices of big onion.
The inner part or ingredients of murtabak are small pieces of meat, small cubes of potatoes and thinly sliced big onions mixed by 'beating' them with an egg. This mixture is then poured onto a half round sheet which is folded into half. When this mixture is cooked, it is removed from the pan and put onto a flipped thin round sheet. The sides of the sheet are folded into square shape like roti canai. Then it is put onto the pan to heat for a short period. When cooked, it is served with dal curry or chicken curry or mixed dal and chicken curry. One piece of murtabak is normally RM4.00 (year 2013 price) including the curry.
These food can be found in Pulau Tikus market in the evening but the stall is not there most of the time. These food are usually sold together by one stall found in Indian coffee shops.
