Penang Apong and Ban Chang Koay
Apong is supposed to be a Chinese Malaysian dessert. It is a type of pancake with about 4 inches in diameter and half a centimeter thick. It is made of rice batter added with coconut flakes, water/milk and eggs. Then it is cooked in a 'iron mould / pan' with some banana slice, sweetern corn and sugar springle on it until it turned golden at the base only. Remove it from the mould, fold it into two and it is ready to be eaten. One piece of this dessert is normally RM0.30 (year 2013 price).
Ban Chang Koay is very much like apong but without coconut flakes. Originally, it is about 7 inches in diameter but very thin about 1 mm thick. The batter is low-heated with some banana slice, sweetern corn and sugar springle on it until it turned golden brown and crispy at the side and base. Therefore, it is supposed to be a crispier version of apong. Now, it has another version that is very thick about 1 cm or half an inch thick when cooking and will be about 1 inch thick when it is folded to be eaten. One piece of this dessert is normally RM0.60 to RM0.80 (year 2013 price).
Oh yes, apong is usually sold in the afternoon and ban chang koay is usually sold in the morning. The taste of apong and banchang koay is different.
