Thai Ponggal is an Indian harvest festival. It falls in the Indian lunar month of Thai to thank for their good harvest and pray for a good harvest the coming year. This festival is celebrated for 3 days.

On the first day, they will burn / throw away their old clothes and rubbish. On the second day, they will make a special prayers. The women especially will dress in new clothes to give thanks and prayers by cooking milk rice. The process of cooking this rice is shown by the photos on the right and will be explained in the next paragraph. On the third day, cows, a holy symbol in Indian culture are blessed, decorated, fed good food and given a day rest. The unmarried girls, may perform rituals to get a good spouse.

Here, I will give a simple process of making the milk rice. Firstly, the women will decorate their pot with some drawings and tie a yellow ginger plant around the pot. Then, they will make a fire using wood and warm up the pot. Milk will be added followed by water. When milk is cooked and over flow, they will shout ponggala for 3 times. Uncooked rice will be poured into the pot. Then some brown sugar and ghee oil will be added into it. When the rice is cooked, they will remove it from the fire to cool down.

The Jalan Kebun Bunga hill temple which held this event, had a few of their organisers to try out the girls' cooking. These girls' usually will have their mother at their side helping them. The girls who were hoping to find a good spouse will decorate their pots to make them look presentable. After trying out the rice, the girls were given a heart shaped candle.
