Islam is the official religion of Malaysia. It was introduced to Malaysia during the 15th century, brought in by the traders from the Middle East. The ruler of Melaka then was Parameswara who became a muslim after marrying a wife from Parsi. Since then, Islam started to spread all over Peninsular Malaysia and to the Malay archipelago. Mosques are very important to muslim because it is a 'house of god', a sacred place and a symbol of Islamic purity.
The pictures beside show a mosques from each states. They are National Mosque, Jamek Mosque, Putra Mosque, Kampung Hulu Mosque, Ubudiah Mosque, Zahir Mosque, Arau Mosque and Penang State Mosque. There are a few types of Islam. There is a minority Islamic group that Malaysian Government does not allow. For this, you need to check with the Government. In Malaysia, a few issues are of important to the Muslim. The first is 'halal'. This actually means permissible to muslim law. Some very common ones are muslims are not allowed to comsume pork and alkohol. They cannot take anything that has these two. The food they take especially meat must be slaughter in the proper way. I guess they have to pray first. Therefore, meat cooked by other religion cannot be consumed. Then, there is this 5 pillars of Islam. The first is that they must believe in only one god that is Allah and accept Muhammad as his messenger. In Malaysia, a Muslim cannot go into churches. During my school days, all muslims cannot be 'invited' and were not 'invited' to attend the annual christian presentation. I don't know why but that was what we did. Maybe the law does not allow non-muslims to preach other religions to muslims. If you are interest to know, yau can ask the State Islamic Department. The second is that muslims must pray 5 times a day at a certain time. The times are 'subuh' at about 05:40 hr, 'zohor' at about 13:00 hr, 'asar' at about 16:20 hr, 'maghrib' at about 19:00 hr, 'isyak' at about 20:10 hr. The third is that muslims have to give charity or tithe to an 'association' for the poor usually through certain appointed people, if not mistaken. The forth is that muslims must fast for about 14 continuous hours everyday in their muslim month of Ramadan. During this month, they are encourage to good deeds. The fifth is that muslims have to perform pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime if they are capable of doing so. Those who have done so will usually put a Haji in front of their name for men and hajjah for women. Before entering for prayers, muslims will have to wash their face, arms and legs. Apart from these, they have to dress properly especially the women will have to make sure that their legs and arms are covered. When going to mosque, the women will put on a scarf to cover their hair and men will usually wear their 'songkok' with their Malay attire. Shoes are not allowed into mosques. |
