Deepavali is a festival, celebrated by Indian race only. I have not seen chinese celebrating Deepavali. This is because the chinese do not decorate their house with 'kolam'.

Little India will be very busy when Deepavali is near because Little India in Georgetown, Penang, is the place where indian (I better put in small letter to show that I am describing a race) related goods can be easily found.

Last year, I gave some pictures before the Deepavali festival. This year, I will put photos taken on the Deepavali day. In fact, Little India looked like 'ghost town' compared to other days. However, I managed to catch a group of tourist eating at the corner of a road. Also, I got some photos of Indian dances performed at the Padang Kota Lama as a celebration for Deepavali festival.

I will tell you a little story that my trainer told his class. It goes something like this. Once upon a time, there was a prince called Rama. His brother's name was Lakshmana. Rama was chased out from the palace because of a misunderstanding. He had a wife called Sita. They lived in a jungle happily until a demon called Revana wanted to catch her wife. One day, the demon transformed himself into a cute little deer when Rama was out and Sita was outside doing her house work. Sita saw the deer and went after it. She was captured by the Revana who turn into a cage and a very big bird called Jatayu. The bird took her to a place called . Rama had to go seaching for her. Hanuman, the monkey god, told Rama about Revana and he found them, fought the demon and won. Lakshmana went home to tell his parents about the victory. The whole village was happy and to welcome Rama home, they lit lights so that he can see his way back in the dark night.

Deepavali is a festival of light, a celebration of good over evil. It is also known as Diwali meaning a row of lights. It is celebrated on the day where the night is the brightest in that year. This is usually in the month of October. For this festival, they will light their houses brightly and decorate the entrance of their houses with 'kolam'. 'Kolam' is a pattern on the floor made using dyed rice. This is to invite Goddess Lakshmi to their home to bless them. Goddess Lakshmi is the God of Wealth and Happiness.
