Penang people welcome every new year with fireworks and some performances. This event is usually held at Padang Kota Lama. However, some shopping complexes will celebrate the new year by displaying some fireworks and performances too. During the last night of the year, roads along Jalan Kelawai, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Lebuh Faquarhar and Lebuh Light will be jammed. Gurney Drive will be closed to motorist. It is a culture for Penang people to jam these roads. The photos on the left were taken on new year's eve and day. The top left photo shows a performance and count down on the new year's eve. The top right photo shows the traffic after the countdown. The photos on the last three rows shows some of the fireworks during the display. Which was the best fireworks? This is part of Penang people's culture especially the young because 1st of Jan is a public holiday. So, if you have plans to visit Penang during New Year, be prepared to walk at night, especially if you want to stay along this stretch of roads. Happy New Year.
