1. Top Spinning (Gasing)

Top spinning is a malay traditional past-time played mostly during the pre-harvest time. Later, it was introduced as a game and played in competition. It is a challenging game because the spinner will have to make the top spin for a long time.

The traditional Malay top is usually big, can be as big as a dinner plate and weight up to 10 pounds. It looks like a discus, usually made of wood, iron and lead. The base of the top is sharp and made from iron to enable it to spin. A string is used to coil around the base of the top. The player will hold the top on its side with the loose end of the string between the fingers. The top will be thrown and the string pulled.

This past time sometimes is played as a competition. In competition, they have longest spinning contest and striking match category. In longest spinning category, the newly launched spinning top will be scooped up and transferred to a wooden post with metal surface. an expert can make a top spin continuously for as long as 2 hours. In striking category, each player will try to topple his opponent's spinning top using his top.
2. Wau

Wau is a malay traditional past-time played mostly during the harvest time. Later, it was introduced as a game and played in competition. It is a challenging game because the player will have to make a kite that is easily launch and fly for a long time in the sky.

In order to do well in competition, the player must be skillful in making good kites. There are 5 designs in Malay traditional kites. The most popular is Wau Bulan or Moon Kite which is the symbol of Malaysia Airlines System.

There are a few category in kite flying competition. The first is the launching of the kite. A good kite must be easily launched and give out a humming sound.

The second is for the kite to fly on its own for the longest time in the sky. Here, after launching, a coconut will be broken and the string of the kite will be tied to the coconut. This coconut will then be dropped into a pail of water. Time will start when the coconut reach the bottom of the pail. Therefore, the player will have to good at handling all this things before the time starts.

The third is the design of the kite. A kite should be beautifully decorated, well designed and well made. I do not know the details of this but I guess you can asked the wau competition association, mainly found in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia.
3. Congkak

Congkak is a malay traditional past-time board game, played mostly by the women inside house. It is usually played for fun and not for any competition. Congkak is a game for 2. The board has a shape of a boat with 1 'home' (a big hole) at each sharp ends, 1 'home' for each player. The centre of the board usually has a total of 14 small holes, 7 on each side of the board or boat.

At start of the game, there will be 7 seeds in each small holes. The first player to start will choose whichever hole she wants to start from. Then she will take all the seeds from the hole and start putting one seed into each of the following holes passing through her 'home' to the holes on the other side until all the seeds are distributed. Then she will pick the seeds from the next hole from where she put the last seed. The same process will be repeated until there is no seed in the next hole from where she put the last seed. Her turn will end and the next player will choose her starting hole. The game ends when all the seeds are in the 'homes'.
