Perhentian Island, as what people usually say, includes 2 islands. They are Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island) and Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian Island).

Big Perhentian Island located is on the east side and Small Perhentian Island is located on the west side. The hotels or even the chalets in Big Perhentian Island are more expensive than those in Small Perhentian Island. The hotels and chalets in Big Perhentian Island are located mostly in the west coast and south coast. Tourist can travel between these islands by boat for a fee.

Small Perhentian Island has hotels and chalets on both east and west sides of its coast. The accommodation on the east side called Long Beach is slightly more expensive than the west side called Coral Beach. The Long Beach has shores with nicer sand any many fries or baby fish by its beach. When I was there, I saw a group of people sitting on the beach catching fry or baby fish with white body and black stripes. Of course, they said they would pour the fish back into the sea. There were quite many of this baby fish.

Coral Beach has a lot of dead and broken corals washed up to its shores. A locals told me last time, corals can be seen along the beach but now they are all dead. So, do not be misled by its name and thought that there are many coral near Coral Beach now.

I stayed in a chalet in Coral Beach. Any one can trek from Coral Beach to Long Beach. It took me less than 15 minutes to stroll one one place to the other. Coral Beach has restaurants that sell many kinds of BBQ seafood set at about RM20. I tried ther BBQ set at a restaurant called Mama's Restaurant. This is also the place that took me snorkelling with 3 British.

The corals in all the 4 places that I went to in Perhentian Island were more colourful than those in Tioman Island. The first place we went to was Shark Point off the southern coast of Big Perhentian Island. I did not see any shark there and the water was a little wavely to me.

Next, we went to Coral Point off the south-east coast of Big Perhentian Island. Here, I saw a small shark twice. The corals were nice and at a shallow rocky area (be careful, you can surely stand on the rocks or corals cos I saw one standing), there were many big black fish swimming in a school. The water is calmer and easier to swim.

Then, the boatman named Jefry took us to Turtle Point and there were many boats near their 'parking' area. Turtle Point is somewhere between Big Perhentian Island and Small Perhentian Island. He was so good he scouted for turtles around that area on boat for us because the 3 British jokingly said no turtle no pay. Jefry said Turtle Point definitely got turtle if not it would not be Turtle Point and started looking for the turtle he called 'Jenny'. And yes, he managed to find Jenny and everyone was happy.

I had a hard time cathcing up with those 3 people because they swam with flippers and can dive. Luckily, the current was not strong. We followed the turtle to a few places to catch it swimming up to breathe. They had a digital camera that can take photos underwater. I had a 'use-one-time' underwater film camera. My camera could not focus well and I just simply click. However, their digital camera can the the turtle pretty sharp and they even took a few shots of the turtle for me using my camera.

Finally, we went to the Lighthouse on Coral Beach side of the sea. The sea current here was much stronger. I could not swim forward because the current will push me back. So, I did not move far at this place. It seems that this area has jumping fish which likes to jump out from water.

Overall, I like this snorkelling trip because I got to see sharks, turtle and many colourful corals and fishes at all the places. Not to forget, this snorkelling trip to 4 places cost me RM40 only, cheaper than Tioman Island. However, I was afraid to take out my camera as it was drizzling that day throughout the trip and the motor boat was small and all wet inside. Anyway, the sea bed looked darker and not as nice due to the dark sky. So, I got only some blur underwater photos. :-(

Short-sighted people like me can buy goggles with power so that you can still enjoy the underwater scenes. Lastly, if you were to visit any where in Terengganu, kindly keep the places clean by throwing your rubbish into rubbish bins.

These brain corals were multi-colour. Some a little yellowish and some very light blue that you might think they were white.

They were colourful but my lousy underwater camera cannot capture them. The outstanding little fish was really there. I did not paste it there.

These black fish have average length of 8" to 1'.
