Pulau Duyung is located in Terengganu River near the river mouth. It is like a stepping stone for Sultan Mahmud Bridge that were built from one side of the river bank to the other side of the river bank. In fact, Sultan Mahmud Bridge also crosses another island called Pulau Besar.

To go to the airport from Kuala Terengganu town centre, you will need to go across to Pulau Duyung. However, to go to the Duyung Fort on Pulau Duyung, you need to take the lower side of the bridge to turn right. Then keep left until you see an arch. There are sign boards showing the way to this fort.

Duyung Fort's wall and pillars was built using bricks with sand, lime, honey and egg white as cements for the lower part of the building. It was built around 1919 by a magistrate. The upper part was made of wood. Parts of the building that were damaged were reconstructed according to its original design.

This building has various Terengganu architecture in its roof such as gabled roofs and Dutch roof. Inside the building, there are articles regarding history of Duyung Island and boats of Terengganu.

I did not visit the traditional boat building site because I was afraid I would miss the bus and did not walk into that area. The heritage bus C-03 can be taken from Shahbandar Square and stop at the lower part of the bridge after crossing one part of Terengganu River. The bus will go straight passing the airport to UMT/UDM and back.

Lastly, if you were to visit any where in Terengganu, kindly keep the places clean by throwing your rubbish into rubbish bins.
