Sarawak has many museums especially in its capital, Kuching. The museums that I have visited were Chinese History Museum, Textile Museum, Natural History Museum, Art Museum and Sarawak Museum. These museums including Islamic Museum are situated very near each other, in Kuching old-town, on the southern bank of Kuching River.

There are a few others situated on the northern bank of Kuching River. They are Cat Museum, Astana and the Fort Margherita.

The Chinese History Museum is situated by the Kuching river bank, opposite Tua Pek Kong temple. This building was built in 1912 and used as a court for the Chinese immigrants. This museum shows the different dialect group of Chinese people who migrated to Sarawak, some of their prominent people and leaders and what they did.

Textile Museum is situated opposite the Post Office building. This museum shows the process of making a textile and attire of some of the indigenous people in Sarawak. It also showed some motifs in the textile made by those people. A few popular motifs are crocodiles, birds men, women and a popular pattern.

The architecture of this textile building is a mixed English Renaissance and English Colonial style. It was built in 1907 as a medical centre.
Fossil Furniture

The Natural History Museum shows fossil of wood. This museum is a private museum rented by someone to exhibit the wood fossil or wood that has turned into stone. I know nothing of such things. Therefore, the only thing that I see are parts of hard wood. The second row right photograph shows a Red Conifer Wood Fossil. That wood felt very hard like rock. It was stated that it was about 12 million years old and found in Kuching division.

I cannot recall anything about the Art Museum because I am not a fan of arts. Also I was in a hurry when I was in this museum area.

Sarawak Museum was built in 1891 by Rajah Brooke to showcase the art-craft of their indigenous people and mostly, the wildlife in Sarawak. This museum has a Victorian Architecture and is the oldest in South East Asia. The design of the building dated to the time of Queen Anne was copied from a Normandy town hall in France.

Apart from the handicraft made by the indigenous people of Sarawak, Sarawak Museum also has a collection of wildlife. This wildlife collection is divided into sections like big size birds, smaller size birds, seaside birds and other land animals. I cannot remember much of the handicraft here. However, this museum reminded me of a museum in Perak.
