Padang Besar Perlis State Park Dark Cave Lake Timah Tasoh
You can stop at Padang Besar to buy some duty free goods if you are coming in from Thailand. There should be a bus station near by but I did not see it. Guess it was much further up and I did not want to waste my time. However, there was a small taxi hut near the Duty Free Shop. Most liquor here is about 30% off the normal selling price in local shops if not mistaken.

It would be good to stay some there overnight so that you can enjoy Perlis State Park which has hostel, campsites and caves for cavers and hikers. Once popular place around here apart from Wang Kelian is Gua Kelam or Dark Cave. The top left photo shows Dark Cave's headquarters (I called this place headquarters) where visitors can take a train into a cave, the second Dark Cave or Gua Kelam 2 instead of walking.

The right top photo shows the ticket booth to enter Gua Kelam that is the Dark Cave that uses planks instead of walking on ground. This hanging bridge was built in 1970 by Dato Long At Tong. Stalactities can be seen and at some areas, they are so low that you have to watch out for them. Almost at the exit, you can see a cascading gour pools as shown by the left second row photo. Inside this cave there is a river flow through it out to the recreational park at the other end as seen by the right second row photo and left third row photo.

After the exit, you can walk straight towards the park as shown by the right third row photo or walk a stairway up to the entrance of another cave as shown in forth row photos, which I think is Gua Kelam 2. I was very disappointed because when I was inside this top cave, someone switched off the lights in the cave. It was really very dark inside without lights. I could not see anything at all. Luckily, I brought my torch light along and I was not too deep inside. There was no sign board saying do not enter nor not completed.

When I asked the people at the HQ, they said that the cave was not ready or complete yet. I am pretty sure a group of 4 'white' tourists took that route back to another entrance because they went in ahead of me using the plank way and I did not see them coming out using the plank way. I was eating my burger outside the Dark Cave when they entered the plank Dark Cave. I really believe the people switched on the lights for them because they were at the HQ asking about the route and train ride. I saw them when my taxi passed by the HQ. Because the train would not move with less than 10 people, I think the HQ people switched on the lights just for them since they came all the way but switched it off without bothering if there were other people inside. I think it was very irresponsible of them.

Anyway for a short distance that I walked inside the top cave, I found it quite man-made with all the big rocks at the bottom without any nice looking stalactites. However, it was quite beautiful but disappointed for not getting to complete the trail. So, tourists who want to visit this place must REMEMBER to take torch light and drop at the HQ before going for a walk inside the caves. The ticket booth people could not be bothered about you.

The left fifth row photo shows the twin mountain of Perlis. In fact, many mountains in Perlis look something like that partly is because the people blow up the mountain to get rocks and cement for buildings. Just a short distance away from the twin mountains is Lake Timah Tasoh. It is a man-made lake or should I say dam as the rivers were jammed up in 1987 and started operational in 1992. It covers an area of 13.38 hectar and is a place for migratory birds to stopover.

Remember to take torch light and at least drop at the HQ first to let them know you want to go inside there.
