Sam Poh Tong is located in Ipoh, just a walking distance away from its main bus station at Medan Gopeng. For those travelling on their own, take a bus to Medan Gopeng. From Medan Gopeng bus terminal, do not take the way towards the junction. Walk straight down and you will see a petrol station on your right. That right turning is going towards Kek Lok Tong. I was told that Kek Lok Tong is located quite deep inside and near foot hill. So I did not go there.

Keep walking straight along Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah passing that petrol station. You will then see a temple on your right called Ling Sen Tong. Go there and walk straight up passing another temple called Nan Tian Tong. Sam Poh Tong is located just beside Nan Tian Tong.

Sam Poh Tong is a chinese buddhist temple as how it is described. It is because it has statues of buddha and some other chinese gods or deities inside the temple. It was discovered in 1912 and in a natural limestone hill. If you are walking in from the outside main entrance, you will see its 'lake garden' on your right and on your right is a blue building to keep urns of deceased.

This garden won the Best Landscape Garden in Malaysia in 1993. It looked nice but I think its not properly maintained. It has a small building / temple which looks like a boat on the 'lake'.

For those interested in going to limestone temples in Perak, Ipoh has many. It seems that they are digging more and more of the mountain and turn them into temples which can be detrimental to the environment. If you do not want to walk, then take a tour to Ipoh. Tell them you want to go Ipoh's cave temples and show you the places where you can see many heritage buildings.
