Malacca or Melaka in Malay Language is a state in south-central part of Malaysia facing the Straits of Malacca. It is bordered by Negeri Sembilan and Johor on the southern side. Its latitute coordinates 2o12'N and longtitude coordinates 102o15'E. Melaka is very near the equator, so it is a very hot and humid place, the temperature about 22oC to 32oC and annual rainfall of 2000mm to 2500mm.
Melaka has a land area of about 1,650 km2 making it the third smallest state in Malaysia. Its population was about 733,000 in 2007 census. Out of this population, 32% of was of Chinese and Peranakan race, 57% was Malays and the rest was of other races such as Indians, Portuguese and Dutch Eurasian. Most of the people in Melaka speak English and Bahasa Malaysia. Bahasa Malaysia / Melayu is its official language because Bahasa Malaysia / Melayu is Malaysia's national language. Public transport in not advance like in Kuala Lumpur. The roads in the city central is narrow like Georgetown in Penang. There are not as many cars in Melaka compared to Penang. So, I guess it would be better if tourists follow tour groups especially to places in Ayer Keroh. As Melaka city is the historical city of Malaysia, trishaws can be easily seen in near the St. Paul's foothill. The trishaws in Melaka was well decorated but Penang trishaws are slowly catching up to them. The Malaysia currency is called Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) or sometimes Malaysian called it Ringgit Malaysia (RM). The denominations in paper / plastic form are RM1, RM5, RM10, RM50 and RM100. The denomination of syilings are 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen. RM1 = 100 sen. If you need to ask regarding Malaysia currency visit Bank Negara Malaysia. As for food, I tried the Wan Than Mee and gound like like most Wan Than Mee in Malaysia. Melaka has many historical buildings built during the European Occupation, many popular ones during the Dutch Occupation. Malacca / Melaka has the most number of museums in Malaysia because Malaysia's history stated from the Sultanate of Melaka. |
