Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is located behind Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street). It was founded Chinese Kapitan Tay Kie Ki in the 1600s. The foundation for the first temple was laid by Kapitan Lee Wai King in 1646. However, in 1801, the temple was rebuilt by Kapitan Chua Su Cheong and later on more features were added.
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple has southern Chinese architecture mainly from Fujian and GuangDong. It was designed according to chinese geomancy. Its special feature is its long flag poles in front of the pavillion. Its sculptures are made using porcelain cut-and-paste shardwork and and some covered with gold gilding. The main hall was built wihtout a single nail. In 2002, Cheng Hoon Teng main temple was given the Award of Merit for Restoration by UNESCO, a UNESCO Asia Pasific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. I did not get any photographs inside because I reached there late. Anyway, it has 3 main chinese beliefs in this temple namely Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Cheng Hoon Teng temple consists of a main temple hall, outer prayer pavillion and other buildings. The main temple hall was built by Kapitan Li Wei King’s son-in-law, Chan Ki Lock in 1704. The main deities in this temple is Goddess of Mercy or Guan Yin. The Goddess of Mercy is situated at the centre altar with Guardian of the Seamen or Ma Chor on the left and God Kuan Ti on the right. The other buildings are mainly used as quarters for monks and nuns, temple administratice centre and ancestral tablets area. Lastly, kindly help keep Malacca clean by throwing rubbish into proper place. |
