Kuala Lumpur International Airport Satelite Building Main Terminal Building KL Sentral
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is located in Sepang area in Selangor, 50km away from Kuala Lumpur near Negeri Sembilan border. The Sepang Formula 1 Circuit is located on north-east of KLIA. KLIA was designed by Japanese architect, Dr Kisho Kurokawa. It covers an area of 10,000 hectares or 100 km2 and was launched on 27th June 1998, just in time for the 16th Commenwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. KLIA cost about RM9 billion to built and was built on the concept of 'Airport in the Forest, Forest in the Airport'. It was awarded 'World's Best Airport' for the 15-25 million passengers per annum category by Airport Council International (ACI) from 2005 to 2007. As it is located in Multimedia Super Corridor, it is an high technology area.

The facilities provided by KLIA are 108 aircraft stands (46 contact, 36 remote, 21 cargo and 5 maintenance stands). KLIA has 2 staggered runways and a 130 m control tower. The main types of counters are 216 check-in, 16 transfer, 26 customs, 60 immigration and 48 emigration. It has a separate building for VVIP arrivals and departures. It also has health, plant and animal quarantine counters. It can serve 90 - 100 aircrafts movements per hour, 7130 passengers during peak hours. Baggage clearance should not be more than 20 minutes.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport has 2 main buildings :-
1. Satelite Building : This building covers an area of about 143404 m2. It is for international flights and mainly transfers. It has 2 levels. The Passenger Level has 4 gateways and aerotrain to baggage reclaim area. The frequency of the aerotrain is about 3 -5 minutes once. Each trip takes less than 2 minutes and can handle about 250 passengers per trip. It has many retail outlets like Royal Selangor Pewter, liquor, perfumes, watches, jeweleries, cigarattes and other branded goods. It also has a few food and beverage outlets. The other level is Mezzanine Level which has lounge, retail outlets and food and beverage outlets.
2. Main Terminal Building : This building covers an area of about 241,000 m2. It is for both international and domestic flights. It has 5 levels. Level 1 is for coach parking, Level 2 for food garden and link to carpark, Level 3 for Arrival Hall, Level 4 for Offices and Level 5 for Departure Hall. The Arrival and Departure Hall has retail, food and beverage outlets.
Note : Apart from these two buildings, there is Contact Pier Building that is joined to Arrival Hall in Main Terminal Building.

Flights out from this airport can be checked-in at KL Sentral. KL Sentral has a city air terminal called KL City Air Terminal (KL CAT) with check-in facilities. After checking-in, travelles can take KLIA Express which goes to-and-fro from KL Sentral to KLIA. This train takes about 28 minutes per trip and frequency is about 15-20 minutes once. This 4-car train can take 156 passengers per trip and cost about RM35 per person per trip.

It is managed by Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAB). It can handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo yearly with its current structure which is about 1/4 of the airport's potential capacity. In 2007, this airport handled 26.5 million passengers per year. KLIA is committed to preserve mother nature with its 'Project Green Planet'. The project incorporates the 'Seven wonders of KLIA' which are Natural Environment, Energy Efficiency, Waste Management, Noise Control, Resource Management, Water Resource and Storm Water Management.
