Kuala Lumpur is a federal territory of Malaysia and located in the centre of state of Selangor. Its latitute coordinate is about 3o8'N and longtitude coordinate is about 101o42'E. Kuala Lumpur is very near the equator, so it is supposed to be a very hot (31oC to 33oC outdoor and 28oC to 29oC indoor) and humid country. However, it can be very dry and hot or wet (until flood) and hot.
According to Kuala Lumpur by Wikipedia, Kuala Lumpur has a land area of about 243.65 km2. Kuala Lumpur is a low land city unlike Penang. Therefore, the build-up area in Kuala Lumpur is as big as its land area. Kuala Lumpur was granted city status in year 1972 and was made a Federal Territory on the 01-Feb-1974. The administration offices of Kuala Lumpur is mainly in the Kuala Lumpur City Hall or Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur in Malay Language (See the taller building in the photo on the left). According to Kuala Lumpur by Wikipedia 2006 statistics, the population in Kuala Lumpur was about 1.58 million. The population density was about 6,484 people per km2. Out of this population (year 2000 census), 43% of its population was of Chinese race, 38% was Bumiputra, 10% was Indian race and the rest was of other races. Apart from this, there are many foreigners working in Kuala Lumpur especially as maid and factory workers for women and for men, in construction and food sector. The languages used by majority of Kuala Lumpur residents are English and Bahasa Malaysia / Melayu, Malaysia's national language. As for chinese dialects, they speak mostly Cantonese. The indian community speaks mostly Tamil. Public transport in Kuala Lumpur is quite good, I should say of international standard. It has a well connected Light Rail Transit (LRT) system around Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding area in Selangor with its hub at KL Sentral. Kereta Tanah Melayu (KTM), Malaysia's only railway company also provide trips in Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding area until Seremban in Negeri Sembilan through its KTM Komuter system. As for airports, there are two airports supporting Kuala Lumpur. One is Subang Airport in Selangor (for domestic, low cost and cargo flight) and a newer one called Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) which is not located in Kuala Lumpur but in Selangor, nearer to Negeri Sembilan and Putrajaya. Kuala Lumpur is not near the sea but it uses Port Klang in Selangor as its seaport. There are more buses in Kuala Lumpur too compare to Penang, therefore increasing its frequency to their respective areas, especially to public places. This is because many Kuala Lumpur people do take public transport. There are a few bus companies servicing Kuala Lumpur and its surroundings. A few companies are Rapid KL and minibus company. They can be easily found in Puduraya which is a bus hub for Tour Buses and other Express (interstates) Buses. The taxis in Kuala Lumpur also give better service than their counterpart in Penang as they do go on meter and not selective of the areas that they prefer to take people. The taxi fare in Kuala Lumpur is quite fair. The Malaysia currency is called Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) or sometimes Malaysian called it Ringgit Malaysia (RM). The denominations in paper / plastic forms are RM1, RM5, RM10, RM50 and RM100. The denomination of syilings are 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen. RM1 = 100 sen. Malaysia's central bank is called Bank Negara Malaysia located near Merdeka Square. So, if you need to ask regarding Malaysia currency visit Bank Negara Malaysia. As for food, Kuala Lumpur has a variety of food, coming from all Malaysia's States. Almost all common Malay food can be found in Kuala Lumpur. Penang food can easily be found here too, like 'Little Penang Cafe' in Mid-Valley Megamall. There are some good restaurants which have cultural performances and stage performances like Saloma Bistro & Theatre Restaurant. Local hawker food can be found in Petaling Street (KL's Chinatown) and Jalan Alor, KL. Western (Victoria Station, Planet Hollywood), European (Santini, Le Bouchon, Sentidos Tapas), Middle Eastern (Al Marjan, Al Sabeel) and Indian (Passage Thru' India) restaurants can also be found. Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia and therefore it is the administrative centre of Malaysia. Malaysia's Parliment, Ministries headoffice and head offices of most public listed companies are in Kuala Lumpur. However, the administrative capital of Malaysia had been moved to Putrajaya where the Prime Minister's office is located. It also has some manufacturing factories surrounding the it, example in Petaling Jaya. Kuala Lumpur has no agriculture area as it is a city, the main one in Malaysia. There are many other places of interest in Kuala Lumpur. One is the National Museum, Istana Budaya and Lake Garden. There are many new outstanding buildings like Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, Royal Selangor Pewter and Berjaya Time Square. |
