Langkawi
Langkawi consists of 99 islands off the sea of Perlis and Thailand. The main island is Langkawi Island which is about 30 km from Kuala Perlis and 51 km from Kuala Kedah. It covers a land area of 467 km2 and is a popular island resort.

Langkawi is an interesting island with its many fables and geological formation co-existing with modern technology. Some places of interest around this town are Eagle Square, Lagenda Park and island hopping to a few big islands such as The Pregnant Maiden Island or Pulau Dayang Bunting.

Kuah Town is the main town in Langkawi where boats and ferries from Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah and Penang will stop. So, all those who go Langakwi Island by sea will drop by this Kuah town. The first landmark you can see from Kuah Jetty is the Eagle Square and next to it is the Lagenda Park / Legend Park.

Kuah has many hotels and budget hotels. Those staying in Langkawi after diving or snorkelling in Pulau Payar Marine Park can easily find accommodation in Kuah. Shopping is another popular activities that tourists do in Kuah because Kuah has many shops and Langkawi is a duty free island.
Eagle Square

Eagle Square is the landmark for visitors who come by sea. It has a statue of an eagle which represents Langkawi's name. 'Lang' is short for 'helang' which means eagle. 'Kawi' is an old malay word which means reddish brown. So, Langkawi is a reddish brown eagle that is the Brahminy Kite eagle found mainly in the Kilim Geoforest Park. Eagle square has some ponds, bridges and restaurants. It is just a walking distance from the ferry terminal.
Lagenda Park

Lagenda Park is just next to the Eagle Square and covers an area of 50 acres. It has 17 monuments each related to a fable of the island. It is opened daily from 9am to 7pm. Admission is free. When I went there on 15-Apr-10, the grass was very dry. I found that place not well maintained in the sense that the grass was cut but not swept away. When I walked, it felt like a thick cushion before I stepped on the ground. Next to this Lagenda Park is the CHOGM Park.
Langkawi's Legend
Dayang Bunting Island or Pregnant Maiden Island is located south-west of Kuah. It is the biggest island of all islands surrounding Langkawi Island. It has the biggest freshwater lake in Langkawi. Pregnant Maiden Island is part of Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park.

The name of this freshwater lake in Langkawi has not one but two legends behind it. The first was between a male genie called Mat Teja who fell in love with a female sprite called Mambang Sari while she was playing with her maid at a Teluk Lawak. Mat Teja went to see a local sage Tok Dian to seek help and manage to win the heart of Mambang Sari. However, seven days after the birth of her baby, the baby died was laid to rest in the lake. Since then, the locals believed the lake has magical powers that can heal barren women.

The legend continued with a King's maid named Dayang Telani who became pregnant after drinking the water from the lake. However, the king was angry because the baby was not naturally conceived and sent her to stay at the lake. Her baby accidentally drowned in the lake when she longingly looked at a boat she spotted. Dayang Telani pleaded with the lake to take her life in return of her baby's life. At the spot the boy drowned, emerged a white crocodile and Dayang Telani was changed into a rock known as the Maiden Stone. This rock looks like a maiden lying on ber back.

Langkawi's Shopping Area
Shopping is a popular activity and important source of income for Langkawi. As it is a duty free island, items such as cigarettes and alcoholic drinks are very cheap compared to almost every else in Malaysia. However, prices for other items are not much different. I do not thinks that the perfumes nor the chocolates are that cheap but these are popular items in Langkawi too.

One important shopping complex is Langkawi Fair Mall which is very near Lagenda Park. When I was there recently, the Pekan Baru was not ready yet.

Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park is built mainly made of Permian marble which were resulted from the baking of Chuping Limestone by Triassic (about 220 million years ago) and granite stones. Dayang Bunting Geoforest Park covers the southern part of Dayang Bunting Island and the centre part of Tuba Island. The fresh water Dayang Bunting Lake was believed to be formed after the collapse of a very large underground limestone cave.
